Operated by Burnley FC in the Community, Whitehough Outdoor Centre is a 22-acre outdoor education facility nestled in the enchanting Pendle countryside. Sleeping up to 64 on-site in dormitory-style rooms, we can accommodate both large and small groups. Our on-site activities include tree climb, survival skills, low ropes, archery, problem solving, orienteering, leap of faith, nightline and much more! We take education out of the classroom and into the great outdoors, creating opportunities for personal and social development, to support and challenge young people to be the best they can be.

The role

We are now looking to recruit to the role of Activity Instructor.

 

The successful applicant will be provide an excellent activity experience for all participants. Deliver a variety of activities depending on your experience, ability and qualifications. The priority with all activities is to deliver a safe experience, focusing on a high level of customer care and enjoyment throughout.

 

Role expectations

We are looking for a team of activity instructors to work through the 2022 season. Working time will be split between activity delivery and other essential roles, including equipment management and maintenance.

 

Reporting to the Outdoor Education Officer the Activity Instructor will be expected to:

 

  • Instruct and supervise activity sessions that are fun and safe and in line with the centre’s normal operating procedures and risk assessments.
  • Be responsible for all equipment required as part of your role and manage it appropriately.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions/wear and tear, near misses and accidents to senior staff.
  • Liaise with all participants throughout the activity to ensure their expectations are being fulfilled and problems are resolved efficiently.
  • Provide the customers with the basic skills and encouragement so they can fully participate in the activity session.
  • Engage with all visitors to the centre and ensure all participating customers are given an enjoyable activity experience.
  • Work with other activity staff to ensure all activities have the appropriate resources and the customers have the best possible experience.
  • Assist with staff training and development if required.
  • To understand and implement the Charity’s Safeguarding policy, procedures, and best practice guidelines in your role. To use this understanding to ensure safe working practices, appropriate reporting of concerns and contribute positively to a safe environment
  • Promote the Burnley FC in the Community brand and ethos in a professional, strong, and positive manner.
  • Hold a commitment to equality and diversity in the workplace. Be able to work flexible hours where the role of the job requires.

 

An ideal candidate will have;                                                   

Essential:

  • First Aid Certificate which involves at least two full days or sixteen hours of instruction and includes an element of assessment. E.g. Outdoor First Aid.
  • Ability to work as part of a team to deliver results.
  • Experience of multi-activity delivery.
  • Ability to deliver a good level of customer service.
  • Experience working in an outdoor activity centre environment.
  • Experience of working with young people.

 

Desirable:

  • NGB qualification in climbing.
  • Archery GB qualification.
  • ML (Summer)/Hill and Moorland/Lowland Leader qualification.
  • Experience working with different age groups (EYFS – Adult).
  • Experience of classroom-based delivery.
