To celebrate Armed Forces Week 2019, Burnley FC in the Community were delighted to invite Everton in the Community to The Leisure Box on Wednesday 26th June for a military veterans friendly.
The friendly against Everton was a chance for both clubs to reflect on Armed Forces Week and its prominent theme of recognising all those that make up the armed forces community – past and present.
Both community foundations are proud to support the local armed forces community and were driving forces in creating Sporting Clubs Supporting Veterans (SCSV), which is a newly-founded group for Northwest sports clubs supporting military veterans.
All clubs involved in this network are supporting military veterans in some way, with all hosting at least one social session a week for veterans, as well as building towards a football offer for younger veterans.
Burnley FC in the Community launched a football initiative for local military veterans back in April 2018, but recent funding from the Veterans’ Foundation has allowed this to grow to an established team competing in a monthly Northwest Military Veterans League against other SCSV clubs.
These football sessions have given the opportunity for local people within the armed forces community to stay fit while also improving their mental, physical and social wellbeing. It also allows them to rekindle the camaraderie from serving and realise the support that lies within their local community when they return from service.
