Derelict for 10 years, the iconic Brierfield Mill is a former textile mill that sits on the border of Burnley and Pendle. The colossal building is at the heart of the local communities and has been for generations.
The site is currently being developed by Burnley FC in the Community, working in close partnership with Sutton Pendle Charitable Trust and Barnfield Construction Ltd; with additional support from P.E.A.R.L, Pendle Borough Council and Lancashire L.E.P.
Plans were implemented in 2015 to bring the unique site back to life and, as a part of this restoration, create a brand new leisure facility in the mill’s old warehouse.
Major reconstruction works of the entire site have now been completed including significant mechanical and engineering works, the reconfiguration and decoration of all three levels and the development of a new mezzanine level.
Only through a like-minded approach with our partners to create something special and valuable to the community have we been able to bring this project to life.
Thanks to a substantial grant of £611k from the Football Foundation (via the Premier League and FA Facilities Fund) and a further £400k from Sport England, an overall cash injection of £1m will see BFCitC move to the internal fit-out stage of the facility.
This phase will include the implementation of an indoor 3G pitch, an indoor sports hall, outdoor 3G pitch, a community gym, a café, classrooms and a dance/fitness studio. It will also oversee the build of a 21 bespoke clip and climb lines and a children’s soft play area.
Work on Burnley FC in the Community’s Northlight Development at the iconic Brierfield Mill started back in September 2016.
With an anticipated opening of January 2019, this state of the art facility will primarily serve each part of the communities in Burnley and Pendle, but will also have a wider reach across East Lancashire and West Yorkshire.
