On Sunday 28th April, the Burnley FC Shadow Youth Team were invited to Boston United FC to play against their academy in the Danny Seager Memorial Trophy.
The match was played at Boston United’s Jakemans Stadium, which was open for local supporters of the club to attend and show their support for their former club hero Danny Seager; who sadly passed away.
The game itself was very close and competitive. Boston took the lead in the first half when a fierce shot forced Clarets’ goalkeeper Murray O’Rourke to save and parry the shot across goal for a Boston tap-in at the far post. Boston then pushed for a second, however, Burnley centre-back Thomas Clark made numerous interceptions and challenges to deny the home side.
The Shadow Youth Team started the second half with more energy and purpose about their play, which led to more opportunities in the attacking third. With 13 minutes remaining, Dean Makunike cut-in from the right-hand side and was bundled to the floor by the Boston defender. Winger Degol Co composed himself before hitting a powerful free kick into the top corner to level the score.
The game finished 1-1 and went straight to penalties. The shootout finished 3-1 to the Shadow Youth Team with ‘keeper O’Rourke saving the first three Boston penalties. James Hughes, Harry Groves and Degol Co dispatched for the Clarets.
The trophy was presented by family members of Danny Seager to Shadow Youth Team captain Harry Groves.
Shadow Youth Team Head Coach, Chris Andrews, said: “First and foremost, we really appreciate being invited to take part in this game against Boston United in their first team stadium, in order to help the Boston community remember one of their long-term serving players.
“The game itself was close, competitive and played in the spirit of the game. Thomas Clark was outstanding in defence today and the three saves in the shootout made by Murray proved to be crucial.
“The Shadow Youth Team staff would like to thank Dwane Groves and all of the staff at Boston United FC for their hospitality on the day.”
