CHAMP (Confident, Healthy, Active, Motivated, Positive) is a 10-week family healthy lifestyles programme which Burnley FC in the Community deliver in partnership with Pendle Leisure Trust’s Up and Active team; and is funded by Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Council for Voluntary Service and East Lancashire CCG.
Aimed at families with children aged 7-11, and delivered at The Leisure Box in Brierfield, the weekly sessions consist of 45 minutes of healthy lifestyle education followed by 45 minutes playing a different sport each week, in order to encourage families in the local area to get active and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
The mix of educational and physical activities ensure that the fun sessions are beneficial to families taking part, with the education sessions covering topics such as the food groups and preparing healthy lunchboxes and the physical activity sessions allowing kids to try new things in a safe space with like-minded children.
15 children and their families took part in the first cohort BFCitC delivered at The Leisure Box, enjoying sports such as dodgeball, cricket, shuffle ball and rounders.
BFCitC received lots of positive feedback from families who completed the course, including parents noticing their children had become more confident, happier, enjoying PE at school more and playing out with their friends outside more often.
Statistics gained also highlight improvements, with children wearing step counters to track their activity both in and out of the weekly sessions and certificates being awarded to those with the highest step count each week. A great way to bring out the children’s competitive side and encouraging them to be more active!
Brother and sister duo Frank and Claudia enjoyed this element of the course, spurred on by the weekly step count challenge they increased their count from 46,422 and 48,578 to 116,500 and 132,388 steps respectively per week. A huge 70,078 and 83,810 step difference!
Frank and Claudia’s mum Amanda said: “The CHAMP programme was very enjoyable and made us all as a family enjoy fitness activities. We met lots of fab people and loved getting a chance to try new things.”
Frank said: “I really liked playing football and especially loved the climbing walls at The Leisure Box. I even managed to do the leap of faith even though I was very scared!”
Feedback from other families who have taken part in the 10-week programme include:
“Thanks again for the last 10 weeks, it was clear from the group that made it to the end that the course brought several families together and forged friendships, which had a lot to do with how you ran the course. As a family we looked forward to the sessions.”
“Thank you so much Charlotte for letting me and my children join the 10-week CHAMP family programme, it’s been amazing. We hope to see you and everyone else in the near future.”
“Thanks for making Thursday evenings great!”
