Extra Time (Over 50s)

Extra Time (Over 50s)

In England, 24% of over 50’s reported feeling lonely some of the time, whilst 7% feel lonely often; which can have a significant negative impact on wellbeing and quality of life.

Our award-winning Extra Time programme helps tackle issues such as loneliness and social isolation, as well as helping to increase participation in physical activity among the senior community. Our friendly and welcoming team provide a range of activities to get involved in.

Extra Time runs every Wednesday morning from 10:00 – 12:00 in the Jimmy McIlroy Stand at Turf Moor.

Our weekly sessions take place in a warm, friendly, and welcoming environment and include:

  • Free refreshments
  • Indoor carpet bowls
  • Board games
  • Dominoes
  • Wellbeing pitch walks
  • Physical activity taster sessions

Our Extra Time survey confirmed that our programme is making a difference:

COVID-19 Response:

Our last face-to-face session was Wednesday 11th March 2020. Since then, participants have received activity packs in the post and enjoyed regular calls from our Health Team, and even a couple from First Team players!

Since the country went into lockdown on 23rd March 2020, the team have made over 600 phone calls to our over 50’s participants. Keen to provide some normality for our participants, we soon created games that we could play over the phone. This included a fun question game involving giant dice, and an adapted version of dominos – a favourite amongst the group!

Doreen “I’m enjoying keeping in touch & the staff are genuinely interested in what we’re doing. The activity packs inspired me to buy a word search book myself!”

George “The BFCitC calls bring light to my day, not being able to see my wife is the hardest thing I’ve been through. Having a chat takes my mind off things.”

Leslie “I’m really looking forward to getting back to Extra Time, Burnley FC is a real community club. In the meantime, I remember the exercise classes we did so I’ve been doing some of those.”
