Shadow Youth Team’s Sam is NFYL All Star

Burnley FC Shadow Youth Team midfielder Sam Olawubiyi has been successful in being selected for the National Football Youth League All Star team.

The National Football Youth League bridges the gap between club’s academies and college football and Sam, who plays central midfield for the SYT first team, is hoping that playing for the All Stars will put him back on the radar of some clubs.

Sam played for a number of academies before his football journey took him to Manchester City’s academy where he had trials and played for two seasons.

He still lives in Manchester today and travels to Burnley throughout the week to train and play for the Shadow Youth Team, as well as completing further education at both Nelson and Colne College and UCFB Burnley, Turf Moor.

However, selection for the All Stars has made his daily commute from Manchester and his hard work to date worth it.

“It’s very exciting to be called up to the All Stars, playing will give me larger exposure to academies,” said Sam.

When asked about how the Shadow Youth Team has helped his aspirations of being a professional footballer, Sam replied: “It’s helped a lot! I’m playing football five days a week and the Coaches have been brilliant. Chris Andrews (SYT Head Coach) is educating me in football and I’m becoming a better person and a better player.

“I’m looking to play for a club so playing five days a week is important; the education side of things is very important as well. I’ve heard about players who have benefitted from the programme so I wanted to take the chance.”

The Burnley FC Shadow Youth Team programme is delivered by Burnley FC in the Community staff in partnership with Nelson and Colne College. The programme gives talented young players between the ages of 16 and 18 the chance to combine academic studies with practical football experience. It is designed to bridge the gap between grassroots and academy football.
